Karo – Mount Sinabung and the Batak Karo Highlands

Karo Regency lies in the highlands of North Sumatra province, on the Barisan mountain range plateau, at the north-eastern rim of Lake Toba. The regional capital is Kabanjahe. The region's centre is Berastagi (Brastagi), the cool highland resort town. Karo is known for the active Sinabung (2,460 m) and Sibayak (2,212 m) volcanoes, Batak Karo culture and highland vegetable and fruit farming.

Mount Sinabung is an active volcano – erupting regularly since 2010, it can be observed from outside the safety zone; the surrounding destroyed villages are a sobering sight. The Mount Sibayak trek is Karo's most popular activity: active fumaroles and sulphur vents in the crater – a half-day trek from Berastagi. Sipiso-piso Waterfall on the rim of Lake Toba is Sumatra's tallest waterfall (120 m). Lingga and Barusjahe Batak Karo villages have traditional rumah adat (community houses) – centuries-old buildings. Berastagi fruit market (Pasar Buah Berastagi) offers passion fruit, markisa and highland vegetables.

Culture and Cuisine

Batak Karo culture is based on the five-clan (merga si lima) system – traditional ceremonies, karo ulos (cloth) and ergo (Karo dance) are part of cultural life. Cuisine is Batak Karo: babi panggang karo (spiced grilled pork with andaliman pepper), cimpa (Karo rice cake), terites (Karo spice blend), and tuak (palm wine) are local flavours.

Public Safety

Karo is a safe highland region. Mount Sinabung is active – always respect the safety zone (usually 3–5 km). A local guide is recommended for the Sibayak trek – sulphur fumes are hazardous. Highland roads can be winding and foggy. Medical care: basic hospital in Kabanjahe; Medan (approx. 1.5–2 hours) has the nearest more advanced hospital.

From Medan Kualanamu Airport, approximately 2 hours south-west by car. The best time to visit is May to September. Accommodation: highland resorts and guesthouses in Berastagi.
