    About Kepulauan Sula Regency

Kepulauan Sula – Pristine Beaches and Clove Plantations in North Maluku

Kepulauan Sula (Sula Islands) Regency lies in the southern part of North Maluku province, between the Banda Sea and the Molucca Sea. The regional capital is Sanana (Mangole Island). The Sula Islands (Taliabu, Mangole, Sanana) are a remote, pristine archipelago – characterised by clove plantations, caves and quiet beaches.

    Attractions and Activities

Mangole Island caves are karst caves with stalactites – Goa Boki Moruru is the largest. Pristine beaches are white-sand and quiet – Pantai Fukweu and Pantai Waitina are the most beautiful. Clove and coconut plantations are the foundation of the islands' economy – can be visited. Marine coral reefs are suitable for snorkelling.

    Culture and Cuisine

Sula culture blends Malay and Moluccan traditions. The pela-gandong alliance system is a Moluccan community tradition. Cuisine is Moluccan: papeda (sago porridge), ikan kuah kuning (yellowish fish curry), kasbi (cassava), and clove tea are local flavours.

    Public Safety

The Sula Islands are safe but extremely remote. Sea routes may be delayed in stormy weather. A local guide is recommended in caves. Medical care is very limited; Ternate (approx. 1.5 hours by flight) has the nearest more advanced hospital.

    Practical Information

Sanana Airport receives flights from Ternate and Ambon. By boat from Ternate or Ambon. The best time to visit is October to April. Accommodation: simple guesthouses in Sanana.

North Maluku (Maluku Utara) is the region of the volcanic islands of Ternate and Tidore, where historic sultanates and the clove trade shaped world history for centuries. The province is less touristy and offers authentic culture and world-class diving. Ternate is the capital, and Halmahera is the largest island in the region.

    Where is North Maluku?

The province is located on the northern Maluku Islands in eastern Indonesia. Ternate is accessible by air from Jakarta and other cities. Tidore and Halmahera are reached by ferry from Ternate. The region is off the main tourist routes.

    What to See?

    1. Ternate – Volcano and Sultanate

Ternate was the seat of the historic Ternate Sultanate. Gamalama volcano dominates the island. The Sultan's Palace (Kedaton), Dutch forts (Oranje, Tolukko), and clove plantations are living reminders of history.

    2. Tidore – Sister Island

Tidore was Ternate's historic rival and partner. Kie Matubu volcano and local villages offer a calm atmosphere. The island is less developed for tourism – which gives an authentic experience.

    3. Halmahera – Nature and Culture

Halmahera is the region's largest island. Jungle, waterfalls, and local communities await. Dodola Island and the Tobelo area are suitable for diving and snorkeling. The province's biodiversity is outstanding.

    4. Cloves and History

North Maluku was once the world center of cloves. Local plantations and markets offer insight into spice cultivation. The history of the sultanates and the Portuguese and Dutch colonial period is present everywhere.

    5. Diving and Marine Life

Halmahera and surrounding waters are rich in macro life, wrecks, and coral reefs. The region is less crowded than southern Maluku – diving is calmer and more untouched.

    When to Visit?

October–April is generally the drier period. Diving is best in October–November and March–May. In the rainy season (July–August) expect heavier rain.

    How Long to Stay?

    5–7 days recommended:

    • 2 days: Ternate, volcano, forts, Sultan's Palace
    • 1 day: Tidore
    • 2–3 days: Halmahera or diving
