Halmahera Selatan – Bacan Island and Spice Island Heritage in South Halmahera

Halmahera Selatan (South Halmahera) Regency lies in the southern part of North Maluku province, encompassing Halmahera's southern peninsula and the Bacan archipelago. The regional capital is Labuha (on Bacan Island). The historic Bacan Sultanate was one of the Spice Islands' most important centres – the clove and nutmeg trade legacy is still felt today.

Bacan Island is the region's centre: the Bacan Sultanate Palace remains and Dutch colonial fort can be visited. Bacan Island's interior rainforests harbour endemic bird species (Wallace Line proximity). Kasiruta and Mandioli are small islands with pristine beaches.

The cuisine is seafood-based: ikan bakar colo-colo (grilled fish with spicy sauce), papeda (sago porridge), gohu ikan (raw fish salad), and kenari (tropical almond) are local flavours.

Halmahera Selatan is a safe region. Use reliable local operators for sea tours. Check local conditions due to volcanic terrain. Medical care is basic; Ternate (approx. 2–3 hours by ferry) has the nearest more advanced hospital.

Practical Information

From Ternate Sultan Babullah Airport, by ferry or speedboat to Labuha approximately 2–3 hours. The best time to visit is March to November. Accommodation: simple guesthouses in Labuha.

4. Cloves and History

North Maluku was once the world center of cloves. Local plantations and markets offer insight into spice cultivation. The history of the sultanates and the Portuguese and Dutch colonial period is present everywhere.

5. Diving and Marine Life

Halmahera and surrounding waters are rich in macro life, wrecks, and coral reefs. The region is less crowded than southern Maluku – diving is calmer and more untouched.

When to Visit?

October–April is generally the drier period. Diving is best in October–November and March–May. In the rainy season (July–August) expect heavier rain.
