Buru Selatan – The Untouched Southern Coast of Buru Island
Buru Selatan (South Buru) Regency lies in Maluku province, on the southern half of Buru Island. The regional capital, Namrole, is a tiny port town on the Banda Sea coast. South Buru is even less developed and known than its northern neighbour – a true refuge of pristine nature and traditional ways of life.
Attractions and Activities
The southern coastline is lined with white-sand bays that are virtually unvisited – the water is crystal-clear and coral reefs untouched. Mangrove forests are perfect for boat exploration, where birdlife (parrots, sea eagles) can be observed. Inland, the Waeapo Plain rice fields and mountain streams offer adventurous hiking. Local fishing villages (kampung nelayan) provide authentic insight into traditional fishing life – fishermen still work with handmade wooden sailing boats.
Culture and Cuisine
South Buru's communities – partly indigenous Buru people, partly migrant Butonese and Ambonese fishermen – live together peacefully. Sasi laut (marine taboo system) is an important tradition regulating fishing seasons. The cuisine is simple and fresh: papeda (sago porridge), ikan kuah (fish soup), and kasbi (sweet potato) are the staples. Traditional fish drying and salting form the basis of coastal village economies.
Public Safety
South Buru is a very safe, quiet region. You can move around Namrole and villages freely at night. Only venture into the island's interior with a local guide. Coordinate with local fishermen for sea excursions – weather and waves are decisive factors. Healthcare is extremely limited: the nearest hospital is in Namlea (approx. 3–4 hours by dirt road); for serious cases, Ambon is necessary.
Practical Information
Namrole's small airport receives flights from Ambon (not daily). From Namlea, the drive takes approximately 3–4 hours on dirt road. The best time to visit is October to April. Accommodation: a few basic guesthouses in Namrole; bring your own equipment and sufficient cash.
