Buru – Maluku's Pristine Mountain Island on the Banda Sea
Buru Regency occupies the northern part of Buru Island in the western half of Maluku province. The island is Maluku's third-largest landmass, yet one of the least known. The regional capital, Namlea, is a quiet port town on Kaeli Bay. Buru Island is characterised by a mountainous interior, dense rainforest and untouched coastline – it is one of the main centres of cajuput (melaleuca) oil production.
Attractions and Activities
Kaeli Bay's coast offers white-sand beaches and calm waters for snorkelling. In the island's interior, a trek up Gunung Kepala Madan (2,736 m) is an adventurous undertaking that few attempt – the rainforest is home to endemic birds and rare orchids. The Waelata Caves hold ancient rock paintings of archaeological significance. Cajuput oil distillation workshops demonstrate the traditional oil-cooking process. Jiku Merasa hot springs offer natural bathing. At Namlea harbour, fishing boats at sunset create a picturesque scene.
Culture and Cuisine
The Buru people (Geba Bupolo) have their own language and animist traditions that have survived alongside Islam. The sasi adat (traditional conservation taboo system) ensures sustainable use of marine and forest resources. Cuisine is built on fresh fish and sago – papeda (sago starch porridge with fish sauce) and ikan bakar (grilled fish) are the staples. Kasbi (a sweet potato variety) is also an important food base.
Public Safety
Buru is a safe, peaceful island. You can walk around Namlea and coastal villages freely at night. A local guide is essential for mountain treks, as trails are sparse and the jungle is dense. Cooperation with local fishermen is recommended for sea excursions. Medical care is very limited – the nearest serious hospital is in Ambon (approx. 45 minutes by air, 8–10 hours by ferry).
Practical Information
Namlea's small airport receives flights from Ambon (propeller planes, approx. 45 minutes). A ferry also operates between Ambon and Namlea (8–10 hours). The best time to visit is October to April (eastern Maluku's drier period). Accommodation: simple guesthouses in Namlea; no accommodation available in the island's interior.
