Lampung Timur – Way Kambas National Park and Sumatran Wilderness

Lampung Timur Regency lies in the eastern part of Lampung province, on the Java Sea coast. Its capital is Sukadana. The region’s greatest natural treasure is Way Kambas National Park – one of Sumatra’s most important wildlife conservation areas.

Attractions and Activities

Way Kambas National Park (125,000 hectares) is the conservation area for the Sumatran elephant and the extremely rare Sumatran rhinoceros (Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary). The Elephant Conservation Center offers elephant-watching and educational programmes. The park’s swamp forests are excellent for birdwatching: herons, storks, kingfishers. Night safari programmes allow observation of the park’s wild animals.

Culture and Cuisine

The population is mainly Javanese and Lampung. Cuisine is varied: Javanese and Lampung dishes blend. Fresh sea fish and crab are available on the region’s mangrove coast sections.

Lampung Timur is a safe region. Travel only with a guide in the national park. Keep your distance when encountering wildlife. Medical care: puskesmas in Sukadana; Bandar Lampung (approx. 2 hours) is the nearest hospital.

Practical Information

From Bandar Lampung Radin Inten II Airport, approximately 2 hours east by car. The national park entrance is at Rajabasa Lama. The best time to visit is June to September. Accommodation: simple guesthouses at the park entrance; also manageable as a day trip from Bandar Lampung.

5. Coffee Plantations

Lampung is one of Indonesia's largest robusta coffee-producing regions. Visiting coffee plantations makes for an interesting side program.

May–October is the dry season. The best surfing period is June–September. Dolphins can be observed year-round.
