Merangin – UNESCO Geopark and Fossil Natural Wonders
Merangin Regency lies in the western-highland part of Jambi province, on the slopes of the Bukit Barisan mountain range. Its capital is Bangko. The region is part of the Merangin Jambi UNESCO Global Geopark – site of 300-million-year-old fossil plant imprints.
Attractions and Activities
Merangin Geopark’s fossil site contains 300-million-year-old (Carboniferous) plant imprints on the Merangin riverbank – a unique geological site. Danau Depati Empat is a highland lake in scenic surroundings. Bukit Barisan forests are suitable for hiking. Rafting opportunities along the Merangin River.
Culture and Cuisine
Malay and Kerinci culture are defining. Cuisine is Jambi: gulai ikan (fish curry), tempoyak (fermented durian), and Padang-style dishes.

Merangin is a safe rural region. Road conditions vary in the highlands. Medical care: basic hospital in Bangko; Jambi city (approx. 5 hours) has more advanced facilities.

From Jambi Sultan Thaha Airport, approximately 5 hours west by car. From Padang, approximately 6 hours. The best time to visit is May to September. Accommodation: simple hotels in Bangko.
