Kerinci – Sumatra's Highest Peak and Kerinci Seblat National Park
Kerinci Regency lies in the western highlands of Jambi province, in the heart of the Bukit Barisan mountain range. The regional capital is Sungai Penuh. Kerinci is home to Mount Kerinci (3,805 m) – Sumatra's highest volcano – and the gateway to Kerinci Seblat National Park (UNESCO World Heritage – part of the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra).
Attractions and Activities
The Mount Kerinci (3,805 m) trek is Sumatra's most iconic trekking challenge – the 2–3 day summit trek offers panoramic views from the crater. Kerinci Seblat National Park is Sumatra's largest national park – habitat of the Sumatran tiger, Sumatran rhinoceros and elephant. Lake Kerinci (Danau Kerinci) is a scenic highland lake. Kayu Aro tea plantation (one of the world's highest-altitude tea plantations) is on a beautiful hillside. Danau Gunung Tujuh (Seven Mountain Lake) is Southeast Asia's highest-altitude lake.
Culture and Cuisine
Kerinci people's culture blends Malay and Minangkabau traditions – elements of matrilineal society. Cuisine is Sumatran: rendang (spiced meat curry), gulai ikan (fish curry), lemang (sticky rice cooked in bamboo), and Kerinci coffee (excellent quality Arabica) are local flavours.
Public Safety
Kerinci is a safe highland region. A local guide is essential for the Mount Kerinci trek – weather changes rapidly. Do not approach wildlife in the national park. Medical care: basic hospital in Sungai Penuh; Padang (approx. 6–7 hours) has the nearest more advanced hospital.
Practical Information
From Padang Minangkabau Airport, approximately 6–7 hours south-east by car. From Jambi, approximately 8–10 hours. The best time to visit is June to September. Accommodation: guesthouses in Sungai Penuh and Kersik Tuo village (Mount Kerinci trek starting point).
