    About Lembata Regency

Lembata – The Lamalera Whale Hunting Village and Ile Ape Volcano

Lembata Regency lies among the eastern island chain of East Nusa Tenggara province, on the Flores Sea. Its capital is Lewoleba. The small volcanic island is home to the world-famous Lamalera traditional whale hunting village and the active Ile Ape volcano.

    Attractions and Activities

Lamalera is Indonesia’s last traditional whale hunting community: fishermen hunt sperm whales using handmade junks (peledang) and bamboo harpoons – this ancient tradition is part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage. Ile Ape volcano (1,517 m) is an active volcano, from its summit a panorama of the Flores Sea and neighbouring islands opens. Ikat (traditional woven textile) making can be experienced in Lembata’s other villages. Beaches around Lewoleba are quiet and pristine shore sections.

    Culture and Cuisine

Lembata has a multi-ethnic, mostly Catholic population. The Lamalera community lives from whale hunting and barter trade (whale meat for highland foods). Tenun ikat weaving is an important part of women’s culture. Cuisine is NTT-style: jagung bose (boiled corn), ikan kuah asam (sour fish curry), and fresh sea fish is the local staple.

    Public Safety

Lembata is safe but an isolated island. Watch the weather for sea travel. Ile Ape is active – check volcanic activity status. Medical care: basic hospital in Lewoleba; Kupang (by air) is the nearest advanced facility.

    Practical Information

To Lewoleba Wunopito Airport from Kupang by small aircraft (limited flights). Alternatively, by ferry from Larantuka (Flores). The best time to visit is April to November. Accommodation: simple guesthouses in Lewoleba.

    More about East Nusa Tenggara

East Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Timur) is one of Indonesia's most diverse provinces: the world-famous Komodo Islands dragons, Flores' volcanic lakes, and traditional Flores…

East Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Timur) is one of Indonesia's most diverse provinces: the world-famous Komodo Islands dragons, Flores' volcanic lakes, and traditional Flores culture create a unique combination. Labuan Bajo is the gateway to Komodo National Park, and Flores is home to Kelimutu's colored lakes and rice terraces.

    Where is East Nusa Tenggara?

The province is located in the eastern Lesser Sunda Islands, with the islands of Timor and Flores. Kupang is the capital, on Timor. Labuan Bajo at the western end of Flores is the departure point for the Komodo Islands, reachable by air from Bali and Jakarta.

    What to See?

    1. Komodo National Park – Komodo Dragons

Komodo National Park is the only place in the world where the Komodo dragon lives. On Rinca and Komodo islands, tours let you see the dragons up close. The park is also famous for diving and snorkeling – Manta Point and Pink Beach are highlights.

    2. Kelimutu – Colored Volcanic Lakes

Kelimutu's three crater lakes in central Flores are unique: the lakes' colors change over time (green, blue, black). Sunrise is the most dramatic. Located near Ende.

    3. Labuan Bajo and Surroundings

Labuan Bajo is the gateway to the Komodo Islands, a lively port town. Padar Island's viewpoint is iconic; Kanawa and Sebayur islands offer crystal-clear waters. Sunset over the islands is unforgettable.

    4. Flores Rice Terraces and Culture

Inland Flores has rice terraces, traditional villages, and ngada culture. Bajawa and surrounding villages (Bena, Wogo) showcase ancient traditions.

    5. Timor and Kupang

Kupang is the capital of East Nusa Tenggara, on Timor. Christ King Cathedral and local markets offer insight. The region is less touristy and offers an authentic experience.

    When to Visit?

April–October is the dry season, ideal for Komodo tours and diving. Komodo dragons can be seen year-round. July–August is peak season.

    How Long to Stay?

    5–8 days recommended:

    • 2–3 days: Komodo NP, Rinca, Padar, snorkeling
    • 2 days: Flores, Kelimutu, Ende
    • 1–2 days: Labuan Bajo and islands
