Kupang – Gateway to East Nusa Tenggara on Timor Island
Kupang Regency lies at the western tip of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province, on Timor Island. The regency surrounds the provincial capital Kupang city (an independent city). Kupang is NTT’s air and sea gateway, with El Tari Airport.
Attractions and Activities
Tablolong Beach is the region’s most beautiful beach: white sand, crystal-clear water, coral reef – excellent for snorkelling. Crystal Cave (Gua Kristal) is a striking stalactite cave near Kupang city. Oenesu Waterfall has a small natural pool suitable for swimming. Lasiana Beach is a coconut palm-lined shore, lovely in the sunshine with local market stalls. Baun marble caves are found in the regency’s interior.
Culture and Cuisine
Kupang is multi-ethnic: Timorese, Rotinese, Sabu and other groups live here, mostly Christian. Tenun ikat (traditional woven textile) is an important cultural element. Se’i (smoked meat, usually pork) is NTT’s most famous dish. Jagung bose (boiled corn and bean dish), katemak (green bean coconut soup) and ikan sabolo (dried fish) are local flavours.
