Flores Timur (East Flores) Regency lies at the easternmost tip of Flores island in East Nusa Tenggara province. The regional capital is Larantuka. The Semana Santa (Holy Week procession) in Larantuka is a centuries-old Portuguese-Catholic tradition – the Good Friday procession carrying the Christ statue through the town is an unforgettable experience. The Solor archipelago (Pulau Solor, Pulau Adonara) offers small fishing villages, coral reefs and volcanic landscapes for adventurers. Ile Mandiri volcano towers above Larantuka – the trek offers stunning views. Local ikat weaving workshops can be visited; East Flores ikat textiles are known for their distinctive patterns.

Culture and Cuisine

Lamaholot people's culture is a synthesis of Catholic faith and ancient animist customs. Portuguese influence is visible in language, music and religious practice. The cuisine is seafood-based: ikan kuah asam (sour fish broth), jagung bose (corn-coconut stew), and tuak (palm wine) are local flavours. Local kopi Flores is excellent arabica.

Public Safety

Flores Timur is a safe region. During Semana Santa, crowds are large – watch your valuables. Crossings to the Solor Islands use small boats – choose reliable operators. Sea currents in the strait waters are strong. Medical care is basic; Kupang (approx. 1.5 hours by flight) has the nearest more advanced hospital.

Practical Information

Larantuka is most easily reached from Maumere (approx. 3–4 hours by car), which has flights from Kupang. Ferries run to the Solor Islands. The best time to visit is April to November; arrive during Holy Week (March–April) for Semana Santa. Accommodation: simple guesthouses in Larantuka.

Labuan Bajo is the gateway to the Komodo Islands, a lively port town. Padar Island's viewpoint is iconic; Kanawa and Sebayur islands offer crystal-clear waters. Sunset over the islands is unforgettable.

4. Flores Rice Terraces and Culture

Inland Flores has rice terraces, traditional villages, and ngada culture. Bajawa and surrounding villages (Bena, Wogo) showcase ancient traditions.

5. Timor and Kupang

Kupang is the capital of East Nusa Tenggara, on Timor. Christ King Cathedral and local markets offer insight. The region is less touristy and offers an authentic experience.

When to Visit?

April–October is the dry season, ideal for Komodo tours and diving. Komodo dragons can be seen year-round. July–August is peak season.
