Ende – The Kelimutu Crater Lakes and the Cultural Heart of Flores

Ende Regency lies in the central part of Flores island in East Nusa Tenggara province. The regional capital, Ende town, is the largest settlement on Flores. Ende's main draw is the Kelimutu volcano with its three differently coloured crater lakes – one of Indonesia's most iconic natural wonders. The town is also the site of Sukarno's exile, Indonesia's first president (1934–1938).

Attractions and Activities

Kelimutu National Park is the region's main attraction: at the volcano's summit, three crater lakes change colour regularly – turquoise, green, black or red. A sunrise trek is an unforgettable experience. In Ende town, Sukarno's exile house (Rumah Pengasingan Bung Karno) can be visited as a museum. The Ikat Centre (Tenun Ikat Ende) presents the tradition of Flores ikat weaving – local woven textiles feature complex patterns and natural dyes. Pasar Ende (Ende Market) is a lively local market with fish, spices and handicrafts.

Culture and Cuisine

The Lio people of Ende have a culture deeply tied to Catholic faith and ancient animist traditions. Ikat weaving here is a UNESCO-level cultural heritage. The cuisine is Flores-style: ikan kuah asam (sour fish broth), jagung titi (roasted corn flakes), and se’i babi (smoked pork) are characteristic dishes. Local kopi Flores arabica is excellent.

Public Safety

Ende is a safe region. On the Kelimutu trek, a headlamp is needed in the pre-dawn darkness – the trail is well maintained, but caution is advised at the crater rim edge. Ende town is calm and friendly. Medical care: Ende town hospital is basic; for more serious care, Kupang (approx. 1 hour by flight).

Practical Information

Ende H. Hasan Aroeboesman Airport serves Kupang–Ende flights. Kelimutu is approximately 1.5 hours by car from the town, near Moni village. The best time to visit is April to November. Accommodation: simple hotels in Ende town; guesthouses in Moni village for Kelimutu trekkers.

3. Labuan Bajo and Surroundings

Labuan Bajo is the gateway to the Komodo Islands, a lively port town. Padar Island's viewpoint is iconic; Kanawa and Sebayur islands offer crystal-clear waters. Sunset over the islands is unforgettable.

4. Flores Rice Terraces and Culture

Inland Flores has rice terraces, traditional villages, and ngada culture. Bajawa and surrounding villages (Bena, Wogo) showcase ancient traditions.

5. Timor and Kupang

Kupang is the capital of East Nusa Tenggara, on Timor. Christ King Cathedral and local markets offer insight. The region is less touristy and offers an authentic experience.

When to Visit?

April–October is the dry season, ideal for Komodo tours and diving. Komodo dragons can be seen year-round. July–August is peak season.
