Mojokerto – Heritage of the Majapahit Empire
Mojokerto Regency lies in the western part of East Java province, southwest of Surabaya. Its capital is Mojokerto city. The region is the former capital of the Majapahit Empire (1293–1527) – one of the most important sites in Javanese and Indonesian history.
Attractions and Activities
Trowulan archaeological park contains remains of the Majapahit Empire’s former capital: Candi Bajang Ratu (refined red-brick gate), Candi Tikus (ritual bathing pool), Candi Brahu (brick stupa). Majapahit Museum (Museum Trowulan) displays archaeological finds. Jolotundo holy spring (977) is one of the oldest Hindu-Javanese monuments. Pacet highland resort on the slopes of Welirang Volcano features natural hot springs.
Culture and Cuisine
Javanese culture is defining: the Majapahit heritage is part of national pride. Cuisine is East Javanese: rujak cingur (cow snout with fruit salad), rawon (black nut soup with beef), tahu campur.
