Magetan – Sarangan Lake and the Foot of Mount Lawu
Magetan Regency lies in the westernmost part of East Java province, at the western foot of Mount Lawu (3,265 m). Its capital is Magetan. The region is known for the Sarangan Lake highland resort and Cemoro Sewu pass.
Attractions and Activities
Telaga Sarangan (Sarangan Lake) is one of Java’s most beautiful highland lakes (1,287 m altitude): boating, horse riding, walking path around the lake. Cemoro Sewu pass on Lawu’s western slope offers scenic views. Mount Lawu is suitable for trekking: sunrise panorama from the summit. Candi Cetho and Candi Sukuh Hindu temples (in neighbouring Karanganyar regency) on Lawu’s slopes are easily reachable from here.
Culture and Cuisine
Javanese culture is defining. Mount Lawu is an important site in Javanese mystical tradition. Cuisine is East Javanese: pecel, nasi rawon, and local brem (rice-based confection/drink).
Public Safety
Magetan is a safe rural region. Watch for curves on highland roads. Medical care: hospital in Magetan city; Madiun (approx. 30 minutes) or Surabaya (approx. 3.5 hours) have more advanced facilities.

From Surabaya Juanda Airport, approximately 3.5 hours west by car. From Solo, approximately 2 hours east. The best time to visit is April to October. Accommodation: guesthouses and hotels on Sarangan Lake’s shore.
