Madiun – Home of Pecel Madiun at the Foot of Mount Wilis
Madiun Regency lies in the western part of East Java province, at the foot of Mount Wilis (2,563 m). Its capital is Mejayan (the independent Madiun city is surrounded by the regency’s territory). The region is an agricultural area with teak forests and Javanese rural life.
Attractions and Activities
Teak plantations and green landscapes on Mount Wilis’s slopes are suitable for hiking. Monumen Kresek is a historical memorial commemorating victims of the PKI uprising. Nglambangan hot springs are natural warm pools on Mount Wilis’s slopes. Nature walks are possible in the Perum Perhutani teak forest management area.
Culture and Cuisine
Javanese culture is defining: wayang (puppet theatre), gamelan music. Pecel Madiun (rice with peanut sauce and vegetables) is Madiun’s most famous dish, known across Indonesia. Brem Madiun (fermented rice drink/cake) is a local speciality.
