Lumajang – At the Foot of Mount Semeru and Tumpak Sewu Waterfall
Lumajang Regency lies in the southern-central part of East Java province. Its capital is Lumajang city. The region sits at the southern foot of Mount Semeru (3,676 m, Java’s highest peak) and is home to the stunning Tumpak Sewu Waterfall.
Attractions and Activities
Tumpak Sewu Waterfall is one of Java’s most stunning waterfalls: hundreds of water strands cascade along a semicircular cliff face – the “thousand waterfalls”. Ranu Pane and Ranu Regulo mountain lakes are the starting points for the Semeru trek. Mount Semeru (Gunung Semeru) is Java’s roof – an active volcano, the trek requires a registered guide and permit. B29 panoramic viewpoint is a famous photo spot for Semeru sunsets. Pura Mandara Giri Semeru Hindu temple lies at the volcano’s foot.
Culture and Cuisine
Javanese culture is defining; Semeru is a sacred mountain in Hindu mythology. Cuisine is East Javanese: nasi rawon (black nut soup curry), soto Lumajang, pecel and local kopi.
