Jember – The Jember Fashion Carnaval and East Java's Tobacco Country

Jember Regency lies in the south-eastern part of East Java province, between the Indian Ocean and the Java highlands. The regional capital is Jember city. Jember is one of Indonesia's largest tobacco-producing regions and has gained international fame through the Jember Fashion Carnaval (JFC) – Indonesia's biggest street fashion parade.

Attractions and Activities

The Jember Fashion Carnaval (JFC, usually in August) is a world-famous street fashion parade – extravagant costumes and thousands of participants. Papuma Beach (Pantai Papuma) is one of East Java's most beautiful beaches: white sand, rocky coves and turquoise water. Tancak Kembar Waterfall is a twin waterfall amid jungle. Tobacco and coffee plantations (arabica) in the highlands can be visited. Rembangan viewpoint offers panoramas across the entire region.

Culture and Cuisine

A blend of Madurese and Javanese culture characterises Jember – communities from Madura island have strong influence. Kerapan sapi (bull racing – a Madurese tradition) is found here too. Cuisine is East Javanese: nasi pecel (rice with peanut sauce), soto lamongan (chicken soup), tape (fermented cassava sweet), and suwar-suwir (cassava sweet) are local favourites.

Public Safety

Jember is a safe region. During JFC, crowds are large – watch your valuables. Currents in Papuma Beach coves can be strong. Medical care: several hospitals are available in Jember city.

From Surabaya Juanda Airport, approximately 4 hours south-east by car. Jember has a small airport with limited flights. The best time to visit is April to October; JFC is in August. Accommodation: hotels and guesthouses in Jember city.

5. Malang and Batu

Highland Malang is a colonial-atmosphere city with theme parks and tea plantations. Batu is a cool highland known for its apple and flower gardens.

April–October is the dry season. Clear, dry weather is ideal for Bromo sunrise and Ijen night trek.
