Banyuwangi – At Java's Eastern Edge
Banyuwangi Regency is located at the easternmost point of East Java, on the Bali Strait. The region is known for Ijen volcano's blue flames, Alas Purwo National Park jungle and traditional Osing culture. Banyuwangi means "birth of the day" – Indonesia's easternmost point where the sun first rises.

1. Ijen Volcano
Ijen volcano crater with sulphur miners and dawn blue flames is world-famous. Trek starts at 2 am – warm clothing and headlamp essential. The turquoise lake and sunrise are unforgettable.

Alas Purwo jungle trails, beaches and wild banteng are spectacular. Plengkung (G-Land) is a world-famous surf spot.

Public Safety
Banyuwangi is generally safe. Always use a local guide for Ijen trek – sulphur gas can be dangerous. Watch waves at beaches; Red Island can have strong currents. Solo travel at night in remote areas is best avoided.
