Bangkalan – Crossing to Madura via the Suramadu Bridge
Bangkalan Regency occupies the western part of Madura Island and is administratively part of East Java province. The Suramadu Bridge – Indonesia's longest bridge – links it to Surabaya, just 5 minutes by car. Bangkalan is the gateway to Madurese culture and authentic coastal life.
Attractions & Activities
The Aer Mata Keraton Arosbaya royal cemetery and the Bukit Jaddih white limestone quarries (which have become an Instagram favorite) are the most well-known attractions. The Suramadu Bridge illuminated at night offers a spectacular view. Rongkang Beach and the Siring Kemuning coastal strip are suitable for sea bathing.
Culture & Cuisine
The most famous dish of Madurese cuisine is sate Madura (sweet-spicy Madurese skewers), now found across all of Indonesia. Sea salt production (garam) around Bangkalan is a traditional industry. Local markets offer fresh prawns and salted dried fish.
Practical Information
Bangkalan is about 30 minutes from Surabaya by car via the Suramadu Bridge. It's worth driving onto the bridge at sunset – beautiful views of the Madura Strait open up.
