Pegunungan Bintang – Pristine World of the Star Mountains
Pegunungan Bintang Regency lies in the eastern highlands of Central Papua province, along the Papua New Guinea border. Its capital is Oksibil. The region is one of Indonesia’s most isolated areas, named after the Star Mountains (Pegunungan Bintang).
Attractions and Activities
Star Mountains with peaks over 3,000 metres conceal pristine highland rainforest. Isolated Papuan communities (Ngalum people) and their traditional way of life can be experienced. Endemic plant and animal species form a treasure trove of biodiversity. Highland valleys and rivers are suitable for hiking.
Culture and Cuisine
Ngalum and other highland Papuan tribes’ culture is defining. Cuisine is Papuan: sweet potato, sago, wild game meat.
Public Safety
Pegunungan Bintang is an extremely isolated area. Special permits required. Medical care: minimal; Jayapura is the nearest advanced facility.
Practical Information
Oksibil small airport with missionary and charter flights from Jayapura (weather-dependent). Overland roads practically do not exist. The best time to visit is May to October. Accommodation: local hospitality.
