    About Mimika Regency

Mimika – The Carstensz Pyramid and Papua’s Mining Region

Mimika Regency lies in the southern part of Central Papua province, between the Arafura Sea and the Jayawijaya Mountains. Its capital is Timika. The region is known for the Freeport-McMoRan Grasberg mine – the world’s largest gold and copper mine – and the Carstensz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya, 4,884 m, highest point in Australasia).

    Attractions and Activities

The Carstensz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya) is one of the “Seven Summits”: the highest point of the Australasian continent, with tropical glaciers. Climbing requires permits and experienced teams. Lorentz National Park (UNESCO World Heritage) extends into the region: an ecosystem ranging from snow-capped peaks to mangrove forests. Asmat tribe’s art is world-famous for wood carving – Agats town is the gateway to the Asmat region.

    Culture and Cuisine

Kamoro and Amungme Papuan tribes’ traditional culture is defining. The mining town (Timika) is cosmopolitan: transmigrant communities. Cuisine is varied: Papuan (sago, papeda), and Indonesian dishes.

    Public Safety

Mimika’s safety level varies – heightened awareness is recommended around the mining zone. Special permits are required for Carstensz climbing. Medical care: hospital in Timika.

    Practical Information

Timika Mozes Kilangin Airport has flights from Jayapura and Jakarta. The best time to visit is May to October. Accommodation: hotels in Timika.

Central Papua (Papua Tengah) is one of Indonesia's newest provinces, in the central Papuan highlands. The province has high mountains, lakes, and traditional communities. Nabire is the capital, on the shores of Cenderawasih Bay. The region is less touristy and suited to expedition-style travel.

    Where is Central Papua?

The province is located in the central highlands of Papua. Nabire is reachable by air; interior areas are accessed by trekking or local flights. Lake Paniai and surrounding regions are remote but rich in culture and landscape.

    What to See?

    1. Lake Paniai (Danau Paniai)

Lake Paniai is one of the province's largest lakes, in the heart of the highlands. Local communities maintain a traditional way of life. The lake and surrounding villages are suitable for treks and cultural discovery. Access by local flight or longer trek.

    2. Nabire – Capital and Gateway

Nabire lies on the shores of Cenderawasih Bay and is the starting point for routes into the highlands. The city's markets and coastal area offer insight. Whale shark programs are sometimes available from the area.

    3. Highland Villages and Culture

Central Papua's highland villages showcase traditional Papuan life. Local ceremonies, crafts, and community life provide an authentic experience. Treks should be organized with local guides.

    4. Biodiversity and Nature

The province's rainforests and mountain ecosystems hold rich biodiversity. Birdwatching and trekking offer opportunities for well-prepared travelers. The region is underdeveloped for tourism – advance planning is needed.

    5. Cenderawasih Bay Connection

Via Nabire, Central Papua connects to Cenderawasih Bay programs (whale sharks, snorkeling). Combined highland and marine programs allow multi-day trips.

    When to Visit?

May–October is the drier period, when the highlands are more accessible. In the rainy season flights and treks can become uncertain.

    How Long to Stay?

5–7 days recommended for main destinations:

    • 2 days: Nabire, markets, coast
    • 2–3 days: Lake Paniai or highland villages
    • 1–2 days: other activities
