Merauke – Wasur National Park and Indonesia’s Eastern Gateway
Merauke Regency lies in the southeasternmost part of Central Papua province, on the Arafura Sea coast, at the border with Papua New Guinea. Its capital is Merauke city. The region encompasses Indonesia’s easternmost major city – part of the “Sabang to Merauke” motto.
Attractions and Activities
Wasur National Park (413,000 hectares) is a mosaic of savanna, swamp and forest: Australian-type fauna (wallaby, cassowary, birds of paradise). Rawa Biru (Blue Swamp) is a natural freshwater lake in scenic surroundings. The 0 kilometre monument marks Indonesia’s eastern endpoint. The Maro River is a site for fishing and boat tours.
Culture and Cuisine
The Marind-Anim Papuan tribe’s traditional culture is defining. Transmigrant communities (Javanese, Sulawesi) are also present. Cuisine is a Papuan-Javanese mix: sago, deer stew, ikan kuah kuning, and Javanese dishes.
