Kepulauan Yapen (Yapen Islands) Regency lies in Central Papua province, in Cenderawasih Bay (Geelvink Bay), south of Biak Island. The regional capital is Serui. Attractions and Activities

Birds of paradise (cenderawasih) can be observed in Yapen Island's interior rainforests – the morning courtship dance in natural surroundings. Cenderawasih Bay marine national park coral reefs are excellent for snorkelling and diving – whale sharks can also be observed in season. Traditional Papuan villages have stilt-house architecture. Mangrove forests can be explored by boat tour.

Yapen Papuan community culture is organised around sago processing, traditional carving, and ceremonial dances. Cuisine is Papuan: papeda (sago porridge), ikan kuah kuning (yellowish fish curry), sagu bakar (grilled sago), and fresh fish are local flavours.

Public Safety

The Yapen Islands are safe but remote. A local guide is recommended for jungle treks and village visits. Medical care is limited; Biak (approx. 3–4 hours by boat) or Jayapura (by flight) has the nearest more advanced hospital.

Practical Information

Serui Airport receives flights from Jayapura and Biak. By boat from Biak, approximately 3–4 hours. The best time to visit is October to March. Accommodation: simple guesthouses in Serui.

Central Papua's highland villages showcase traditional Papuan life. Local ceremonies, crafts, and community life provide an authentic experience. Treks should be organized with local guides.

4. Biodiversity and Nature

The province's rainforests and mountain ecosystems hold rich biodiversity. Birdwatching and trekking offer opportunities for well-prepared travelers. The region is underdeveloped for tourism – advance planning is needed.
