    About Magelang Regency

Magelang – Borobudur Temple and Volcano Country

Magelang Regency lies in the central part of Central Java province, between the Merapi and Merbabu volcanoes. Its capital is Mungkid. The region is home to the world-famous Borobudur Buddhist temple (UNESCO World Heritage) – Indonesia’s most visited cultural site.

    Attractions and Activities

Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple (9th century): nine levels, 2,672 relief panels, 504 Buddha statues – sunrise photographs are iconic. Ketep Pass volcanic viewpoint on the saddle between Merapi and Merbabu: panoramic views of both volcanoes. Mendut and Pawon temples near Borobudur are smaller Buddhist shrines. Mount Merapi (2,968 m) is Java’s most active volcano – jeep tours can be arranged on the southern slopes. Mount Merbabu (3,145 m) is a trekking destination with fine views.

    Culture and Cuisine

Javanese culture and Buddhist heritage are defining. The Vesak festival (Buddha’s birthday) at Borobudur is an annual religious event. Cuisine is Central Javanese: mie ongklok (local noodles), sop senerek, kupat tahu and getuk (sweet potato confection).

    Public Safety

    Practical Information
