    About Klaten Regency

Klaten – Prambanan's Neighbour and Javanese Temple Treasures in Central Java

Klaten Regency lies in the south-central part of Central Java province, directly between Yogyakarta Special Region and the city of Surakarta (Solo). The regional capital is Klaten town. Klaten is the direct neighbour of the Prambanan UNESCO World Heritage Hindu temple complex – the region conceals numerous smaller Hindu-Buddhist temples and natural springs.

    Attractions and Activities

Prambanan (UNESCO World Heritage) is Central Java's most important Hindu temple complex – within Klaten Regency. Candi Plaosan is a beautiful twin Buddhist temple with ornate statue niches. Candi Sewu (Thousand Temples) is a large Buddhist temple complex. Umbul Ponggok is a natural spring that became world-famous for underwater photography. Umbul Manten is a crystal-clear natural pool. Rowo Jombor Lake is suitable for fishing boat tours.

    Culture and Cuisine

Klaten is the meeting point of Javanese court culture and Javanese rural tradition – between Solo and Yogyakarta. Batik Klaten-Bayat tradition is the region's cultural heritage. Cuisine is Central Javanese: sego wiwit (ceremonial rice), nasi gudeg (jackfruit curry), ayam goreng Klaten (Klaten fried chicken – famous across Java), and tahu Adem are local favourites.

    Public Safety

Klaten is a safe region. Mount Merapi can be dangerous from the northern direction – respect the safety zone. Roads are in good condition. Medical care: excellent hospitals in Klaten town and nearby Solo/Yogyakarta.

    Practical Information

From Yogyakarta YIA or Adisucipto Airport, approximately 30–40 minutes by car. From Solo Adi Sumarmo Airport, approximately 30 minutes. The best time to visit is April to October. Accommodation: hotels in Klaten town; wider selection in Yogyakarta and Solo.
