Banjarnegara – The Magical World of the Dieng Plateau

Banjarnegara Regency is located in Central Java province and encompasses one of its most spectacular natural and cultural treasures, the Dieng Plateau (Dataran Tinggi Dieng). Sitting at 1800-2000 metres above sea level, the plateau is home to one of Java's most unique landscapes: sulphur-coloured crater lakes, ancient Hindu temples and cold mountain air.

Attractions & Activities

On the Dieng Plateau, Telaga Warna (Colour-Changing Lake) shimmers in changing colours due to sulphur oxides – particularly mystical in the morning mist. The Candi Arjuna Hindu temple complex is one of Central Java's best-preserved Hindu monuments. The active Kawah Sikidang crater can be approached directly, and the boiling sulphurous mud provides a spectacular sight. Sikunir Peak is one of Indonesia's sunrise viewpoints.

Culture & Cuisine

The legendary dreadlocks of children living on the Dieng Plateau (Anak Gimbal) is a unique cultural phenomenon of the local community. A local onion variety (bawang Dieng) and carica (Andean papaya species) fruit can only be grown at this altitude. Purwaceng (local medicinal herb) tea is drunk for its warming effect on the cold plateau.

Practical Information

Wonosobo is the closest major town to the Dieng Plateau (about 30 minutes); 2 hours from Purwokerto, 3 hours from Yogyakarta by car. It can be very cold at night (0-10°C) – warm clothing is essential.

3. Dieng Plateau

A volcanic plateau at 2,000 meters elevation with ancient Hindu temples, colorful crater lakes, and geothermal phenomena. Sunrise from Sikunir Hill is breathtaking.

4. Solo (Surakarta)

One of the centers of Javanese culture with two royal palaces (Kraton). Batik markets, traditional gamelan music, and local gastronomy provide an authentic Javanese experience.

5. Semarang – Colonial Heritage

Semarang's old town features Dutch colonial buildings, Chinese temples, and multicultural gastronomy. The Lawang Sewu building and Sam Poo Kong temple are the most famous.

April–October is the dry season, ideal for temple visits and the Dieng Plateau.
