Kaur – Pristine Beaches and Turtle Nesting Sites on Bengkulu's Southern Coast
Kaur Regency lies in the southernmost part of Bengkulu province, on the Indian Ocean coast at the western foothills of the Bukit Barisan mountain range. The regional capital is Bintuhan. Kaur is one of Sumatra's least-known regions: pristine Indian Ocean beaches, sea turtle nesting sites and the Bukit Barisan highland fringe make it special.
Attractions and Activities
Pristine Indian Ocean beaches (Pantai Laguna, Pantai Way Hawang) are long sandy shores with rocks – virtually tourist-free locations. Sea turtle nesting sites (penangkaran penyu) along the coast – watching turtles lay eggs and releasing hatchlings into the sea is a special experience. Bukit Barisan mountain fringe areas are suitable for rainforest hikes. Local fishing villages have traditional boat-based lifestyles.
Culture and Cuisine
Kaur and Semendo people's culture blends local Malay and Barisan highland traditions. Traditional fishing and farming life is the daily rhythm. Cuisine is Bengkulu-style: ikan bakar (grilled fish), pindang (sour fish broth), lemang (sticky rice cooked in bamboo), and local tropical fruits are local flavours.
Public Safety
Kaur is a safe rural region. Indian Ocean beach currents are extremely strong – do not swim deep and heed local warnings. Highland roads can be difficult. Medical care is very limited; Bengkulu city (approx. 5–6 hours) has the nearest more advanced hospital.
Practical Information
From Bengkulu Fatmawati Soekarno Airport, approximately 5–6 hours south by car. The best time to visit is May to September; turtle nesting season is October–March. Accommodation: very limited – simple guesthouses in Bintuhan.
