    About Lebak Regency

Lebak – The Baduy Indigenous Community and Sawarna Beach

Lebak Regency lies in the southern-interior part of Banten province, stretching to the Indian Ocean coast. Its capital is Rangkasbitung. Lebak’s most important cultural treasure is the Baduy indigenous community – one of Java’s last tradition-preserving peoples.

    Attractions and Activities

The Baduy community (Suku Baduy) is Java’s most well-known indigenous people: the Inner Baduy (white-clad) live in complete seclusion, while Outer Baduy (black-clad) villages can be visited with a local guide – a technology-free, traditional lifestyle. Sawarna Beach (Pantai Sawarna) is one of Banten’s most beautiful beaches: white sand, rocky cliffs, surfing. The eastern part of Halimun-Salak National Park extends into Lebak: rainforest, waterfalls. The Bayah mines (old gold mine) are a historical site.

    Culture and Cuisine

Baduy culture is unique: preserving animist-Hindu traditions against the modern world. Sundanese population’s batik and pencak silat traditions are also alive. Cuisine is Sundanese: nasi timbel, karedok, and local fresh sea fish on the southern coast.

    Public Safety

Lebak is a safe region. When entering Baduy territory, follow the community’s rules (no photography with Inner Baduy, no technology). Indian Ocean beach currents are strong. Medical care: hospital in Rangkasbitung; Jakarta (approx. 3 hours) has more advanced facilities.

    Practical Information

From Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta Airport, approximately 3 hours south-west by car to Rangkasbitung. To Sawarna Beach, approximately 4–5 hours. The best time to visit is April to October. Accommodation: hotels in Rangkasbitung; guesthouses near Sawarna.
