Kota Tangerang – The City at Jakarta's Western Door
Kota Tangerang is directly west of Jakarta, separated from the capital by little more than the Cisadane River, and home to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport — Indonesia's main international gateway. The city has long been one of the most industrialised in Banten province, with major factories lining the surrounding industrial corridors, yet it also contains one of the oldest Hakka-Chinese settlements in the region, centred on the Pasar Lama neighbourhood near the Cisadane riverbank.
What to See and Do
Klenteng Boen Tek Bio on Jalan Pasar Lama is one of the oldest Chinese temples in Banten, active since the 17th century and surrounded by a charming cluster of heritage shophouses. The Cisadane riverfront has been developed into a pleasant promenade with weekend food stalls, and Taman Kota offers green relief from the urban bustle. Aviation enthusiasts visit the Soekarno-Hatta perimeter roads for aircraft-spotting as wide-bodies cross the threshold.
Local Cuisine
Laksa Tangerang is the city's most distinctive dish — a rich coconut-curry noodle broth quite unlike the laksa of Bogor or the Betawi capital, served with taoge (bean sprouts) and dried shrimp. Soto tangkar (beef-rib broth in coconut milk) and gecom (rice steamed in coconut milk with side dishes) also reflect the city's Betawi-Hakka heritage. The Pasar Lama strip comes alive after dark with food carts and small restaurants.
Real Estate Market
Tangerang's rental market is among the most active outside Jakarta. Proximity to Soekarno-Hatta drives demand for furnished units near the airport for airline crews and logistics workers, while the KRL commuter line from Tangerang Kota station to Jakarta Kota makes the city popular with Jakarta office workers seeking lower rents. Large perumahan estates in Cipondoh, Periuk, and Neglasari offer affordable landed houses at a fraction of equivalent Jakarta prices.
