    About Meunasah Lueng

Meunasah Lueng – gampong on the banks of Sungai Batee Iliek, with the burial site of Tun Sri Lanang

Meunasah Lueng is a gampong (Indonesian village-level administrative unit) in Kecamatan Samalanga, Kabupaten Bireuen, Aceh province, Indonesia. The settlement is located on the banks of the Sungai Batee Iliek river. Its postal code is 24264. The gampong is situated on the island of Sumatra, near the main highway connecting Banda Aceh and Medan, along which Kabupaten Bireuen also lies. In terms of broader regency-level classification, Kabupaten Bireuen became an independent kabupaten on October 12, 1999, following its separation from Kabupaten Aceh Utara.

    General overview

Meunasah Lueng is one of the smaller gampongs in Kecamatan Samalanga, administratively headed by a keuchik. For the 2021–2027 period, Bukhari held the position of keuchik after receiving 118 votes in the village head election. The voter registry contained a total of 197 eligible voters. The gampong falls within the administrative framework of Kecamatan Samalanga, which is one of the districts of Kabupaten Bireuen and has played a prominent role in Acehnese history. The hero known from Samalanga is Pocut Meuligoe, who, born in Gampong Baro, led Samalangan youth against the Dutch in battles fought at the Batee Iliek river. At the Kabupaten Bireuen level, it is worth noting that the kabupaten has an area of 1,796.32 km² and elevations ranging from 0 to 2,637 meters above sea level. The kabupaten comprises a total of 17 kecamatan, one of which is Kecamatan Samalanga, and the entire kabupaten has 609 gampongs. The historical significance of Kabupaten Bireuen is evidenced by the fact that during Indonesia's independence struggle, the kabupaten was one of the country's important bases, and on June 18, 1948, it was proclaimed the second capital of the Indonesian Republic, when the Indonesian government was forced to relocate from Bukittinggi due to Dutch military aggression.

    Real estate and investment

Village-level real estate market data for Meunasah Lueng is currently not available in publicly accessible sources; therefore, the following analysis relies on verifiable market characteristics at the Kabupaten Bireuen level. In recent times, Kabupaten Bireuen has increasingly become the focus of potential home buyers' attention, appearing on the market with various subsidized residential housing projects, which typically remain priced below 200 million rupiah. One available project, for example, offered 152 units at 140 million rupiah per unit. Other developers offer residential properties with a floor area of 36 m² at a unit price of 150 million rupiah. These figures apply to the kabupaten as a whole and do not necessarily reflect local price proportions specific to within Kecamatan Samalanga and thus to Meunasah Lueng. Regarding the general framework of Indonesian land ownership regulations, it can be stated that foreign nationals generally cannot acquire full ownership rights (Hak Milik) over property in Indonesia; for them, primarily Hak Pakai (use rights) or Hak Sewa (lease rights) are available, which are limited in time and conditions. In the case of Meunasah Lueng, when evaluating investment considerations, one should take into account the gampong's small size, the limitations of local infrastructure, and the fact that authorities and experts regard the Samalangan heritage of Tun Sri Lanang as a valuable site from the perspective of Malay–Nusantaran historical tourism.

    Safety and security

Village-level public safety statistics for Meunasah Lueng are not available in verifiable sources; therefore, the following describes the generally known context of the broader region. Kabupaten Bireuen was one of the former main bases of the Gerakan Aceh Merdeka (GAM) movement, whose activities gradually ceased after 2003 with the introduction of martial law and subsequently with the 2005 Helsinki Agreement. The kabupaten is characterized by a gradually normalizing public security situation following the Helsinki peace agreement. Aceh province holds a special autonomous status within Indonesia, and the Acehnese legal system incorporates local customary law and certain elements of Islamic law alongside the standard Indonesian laws. The 2021 village head election in Gampong Meunasah Lueng proceeded smoothly without incident, which generally indicates stability in local public order. More detailed findings based on, for example, criminal statistics cannot be made on the basis of available source material.

    Tourist attractions

The most significant identifiable landmark in Meunasah Lueng is the burial site and former residence of Tun Sri Lanang. Tun Sri Lanang – who was a sastrawan (man of letters) and the editor-compiler of the work Sulalatus Salatin – died in 1659 and was buried in Gampong Meunasah Lueng, in Kecamatan Samalanga. His original name was Tun Muhammad, and he served as Samalanga's first uleebalang (1615–1659). Tun Sri Lanang was brought to Aceh by Sultan Iskandar Muda after Aceh defeated Johor in 1613, and was subsequently appointed the first leader of Samalanga as part of the Aceh Darussalam kingdom. At the burial site stands an authentic Acehnese traditional wooden building (rumoh adat), which is recognized as Tun Sri Lanang's 17th-century residence; nearby are the graves of Tun Sri Lanang, Syech Muda Bugeh, and Pocut Meuligoe – a fifth-generation descendant of Tun Sri Lanang. The tombstone was carved from andesite stone 0.90 meters high; the monument consists of two cungkup (covered sepulchers), and the nisan (gravestone) with its hexagonal base is decorated with lotus flower carvings. The burial complex is visited by domestic pilgrims and for tourism purposes, and foreign visitors, primarily from Malaysia, also arrive regularly; the nearly one-hectare area came under the management of Kabupaten Bireuen as a donation from the Yayasan Tun Sri Lanang. Since the burial site was identified in 2004, pilgrims have regularly arrived in Meunasah Lueng, including descendants of Tun Sri Lanang from both Indonesia and Malaysia. The pilgrimage site and burial complex are also regarded as a symbolic nexus of cultural and historical connections between Aceh, Malaysia, and Singapore.

    Summary

Meunasah Lueng is a small-sized gampong in Kecamatan Samalanga, Kabupaten Bireuen, whose most important known characteristics are its location along the Sungai Batee Iliek and the presence of the Tun Sri Lanang burial complex. The latter – as the burial place of one of the prominent figures in Malay literature and history – is the only tourist attraction of verifiable significance in the village based on available sources, and represents considerable appeal at the regional level. Meunasah Lueng as a residential and real estate market destination cannot be evaluated independently based on available data; the broader Kabupaten Bireuen level context shows an available and developing but overall modestly developed real estate market. The gampong primarily appeals to those interested in Acehnese and Malay cultural history, rather than those seeking an investment opportunity or a mass tourism destination.

Samalanga – Bireuen's centre of Islamic education

Samalanga is a district in eastern Bireuen Regency renowned throughout Aceh for its concentration of Islamic boarding schools (dayah). The district has been a centre of traditional Islamic education for centuries, with prestigious dayah institutions attracting students from across Aceh and beyond, and this educational heritage shapes the district's character profoundly. The community is deeply religious, scholarly traditions are revered, and the dayah system creates a unique social and economic ecosystem. The district also spans from the north coast inland, combining maritime and agricultural activities that complement its central educational identity.

    Tourism and attractions

Samalanga's cultural significance lies in its dayah institutions, which represent some of Aceh's oldest continuous educational traditions. Visitors interested in Islamic culture and education can observe the dayah system where students study classical Islamic texts in a communal boarding environment, and the district's coastal section offers quiet beaches and fishing village experiences. The blend of scholarly tradition and maritime life creates an interesting cultural contrast within a single district, and traditional Acehnese coffee culture is well represented in the local warkop (coffee shops) that serve as social gathering places. Any visit to a dayah should be approached as an active religious institution rather than a tourist site.

    Property market

Property in Samalanga is shaped by the dayah economy. Residential properties near major dayah institutions benefit from student and staff housing demand, and agricultural land in the coastal and inland areas follows typical Bireuen pricing, very affordable and primarily rice-based. The educational sector creates a modest service economy that supports some commercial property along the main roads, and land values are low overall but stable. Indonesian land law applies in the usual way, and the institutional anchors provided by the dayah system give certain residential and small-commercial parcels a more durable underlying demand than would be present in a purely agricultural sub-district.

    Rental and investment outlook

The dayah student population creates a unique rental demand profile, including simple accommodation for students, food service businesses, book and stationery shops and basic transport services. This educational economy provides more diversified rental demand than in purely agricultural districts, and agricultural returns from rice and coastal fishing supplement the education-driven economy. Investment here benefits from the institutional stability that the dayah system provides, and small-scale residential and service-oriented commercial assets near established dayah locations can produce steady, if modest, returns over time, with limited exposure to the swings that affect more discretionary commercial activity in other regency districts.

    Practical tips

Samalanga is located on the north coast highway east of Bireuen town, providing good road connectivity. The district's Islamic character is particularly pronounced, and visitors should dress very conservatively and be respectful of the religious environment, with particular attention to behaviour around dayah complexes and at prayer times. Infrastructure is adequate along the highway corridor, and the coastal climate is hot and humid. Dayah visits should be arranged in advance and approached with cultural sensitivity, as these are active educational institutions rather than tourist sites, and engagement is best mediated through known local contacts who can facilitate appropriate introductions.

Aceh is the northernmost province of Sumatra, where Islamic traditions, natural beauty, and historical heritage intertwine in a unique way. The province faces the Indian Ocean, and since its rebuilding after the 2004 tsunami, it has become a renewed, welcoming region.

Aceh is located at the northern tip of Sumatra, between the Indian Ocean and the Strait of Malacca. Banda Aceh is the provincial capital, directly accessible by air from Jakarta and Medan.

What to See in Aceh Province?

    4. Sabang – Indonesia's Zero Kilometer Point

Sabang on Weh Island marks Indonesia's westernmost point. The 0 km monument is a popular photo spot, and the surrounding natural beauty is worth the visit on its own.

    5. Acehnese Coffee Culture

Aceh is famous for its Gayo coffee, grown in the central highlands. Local coffee shops (warkop) are the centers of social life, where traditional Acehnese coffee is a must-try.

    When to Visit Aceh?
