    About Yogyakarta

    About Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta, often called Jogja, is a major cultural and educational center in Java and one of Indonesia's most popular tourist destinations. Located in the Yogyakarta Special Region, the city is renowned for its royal heritage, traditional arts, and proximity to the ancient temples of Borobudur and Prambanan.

    History & Culture

Founded in 1756, Yogyakarta is home to the Sultanate of Hamengkubuwono, which has ruled the region since 1749. The city served as Indonesia's revolutionary capital from 1946 to 1949 during the struggle for independence. Today, the Kraton (Sultan's Palace) remains the cultural heart of the city, surrounded by traditional Javanese neighborhoods.

Yogyakarta is a center for traditional Javanese arts, including batik, wayang puppetry, gamelan music, and classical dance. The city's numerous universities and art schools attract students from across Indonesia, earning it the nickname "City of Students" and "City of Culture."

    Geography & Climate

Located at an elevation of 113 meters above sea level, Yogyakarta enjoys a tropical monsoon climate with an average temperature of 26.4°C. The city is strategically positioned between the active Mount Merapi volcano to the north and the Indian Ocean to the south, creating a unique cultural and spiritual landscape.

    Tourism & Attractions

Yogyakarta serves as the perfect base for exploring Borobudur (the world's largest Buddhist temple) and Prambanan (a magnificent Hindu temple complex), both UNESCO World Heritage sites located within 40 minutes of the city. The city itself offers the Kraton Palace, Taman Sari Water Castle, Malioboro shopping street, and numerous museums showcasing Javanese culture and history.
